STD Testing Q & A

What is STD Testing?

STD testing is a broad term that encompasses a variety of tests designed to detect various STDs. The type of tests administered depend on the STDs that are being tested for:

  • The Thin Prep Pap Test can also test for gonorrhoea or chlamydia, HPV, and Trichomonas.
  • A blood sample is typically used to test for syphilis, hepatitis, and HIV.
  • A swab of the genitals or anus is needed to test for herpes.

Sometimes, just one test is performed. Other times, a host of tests are done to check for many different STDs. Each test has a laboratory charge. Talk with Dr. Taylor about the testing which is best for you.

How Long Does It Take to Get Results from STD Tests?

After the required samples are collected, they’re typically sent out to a lab for testing. The process of sending out samples, testing them in a lab and getting the results back typically takes anywhere from 2 days to a week, but it can take longer. Patients can ask when they should expect to get the results of their tests at the time they’re tested. Your test results will be in the patient portal PatientFusion.com  Get your user ID and password from the friendly staff at Heathcare For Women.

Where Can Women Get Tested for STDs?

A number of different places offer STD testing, including some hospitals, clinics, outpatient centers, and doctor’s offices. Women who want discreet testing often go to their OB/GYNs. OB/GYNs are fully qualified to provide STD testing, and no one except the healthcare providers at an office knows whether a woman is there for STD testing or a routine exam. By law, all patient records -- including the nature of appointments -- is kept confidential.

Is STD Testing Covered by Health Insurance?

Because samples are sent to a lab for examination, STD testing is usually covered by health insurance policies in the same way any laboratory work is. Some policies provide robust coverage for lab work, while others offer minimal coverage. Patients should check the section of their policy that addresses lab work to find out what testing their specific health insurance covers.
