Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It can infect both men and women and can occur in the genital, rectal, and throat areas. Gonorrhea is most commonly spread through sexual contact, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex.
Symptoms of gonorrhea may vary, and some people may not experience any symptoms at all. When symptoms do occur, they can include:
1. In Men:
- Pain or discomfort during urination
- Discharge from the penis
- Testicular pain or swelling
2. In Women:
- Pain or burning during urination
- Increased vaginal discharge
- Vaginal bleeding between periods
3. In Both Men and Women:
- Anal itching, discomfort, or discharge (if the infection is in the rectum)
- Sore throat (if the infection is in the throat)
It's important to note that gonorrhea can also be present without symptoms, making regular STI screenings important for sexually active individuals.
If left untreated, gonorrhea can lead to serious complications, including pelvic inflammatory disease (in women), infertility, and an increased risk of HIV transmission.
Gonorrhea can be diagnosed through laboratory testing of samples taken from the infected site (urethra, cervix, throat, rectum). Treatment typically involves antibiotics, but it's crucial to complete the entire course of medication as prescribed by a healthcare professional. It's also important to notify sexual partners so they can be tested and treated if necessary.
Prevention measures include practicing safe sex, using condoms consistently and correctly, and getting regular STI screenings, especially for those who are sexually active. If you suspect you have gonorrhea or another STI, it's essential to seek medical attention promptly.
